Marriage Migrants in Asia: Beyond the Internet-order Bride

Friday, January 11, 2013   19:30 - 21:00

  • Doug MacLean

The increasing phenomenon of international marriage migration in Asia needs to be looked at beyond the stereotypical image of the mail-order (or internet-order) bride. Mr. MacLean will discuss why marriage migrants, almost always women, travel for marriage, the range of experiences they encounter in their journey to a new country, and equally importantly, why potential husbands look abroad for marriage in the first place. The talk will take a broad focus, examining the “push factors” in sending countries like Vietnam, China, and the Philippines, and discussing the “pull factors” in nearby destinations such as Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan.
